Park Krajobrazowy Puszczy Rominckiej

We present our experiences and learn from others

The Environmental Project Coordination Center organized a conference in Lublin summarizing the project for the protection of species and habitats in the State Forests. It was implemented in 114 forest districts, 118 Natura 2000 areas, for 30 types of habitats and 32 species of plants and animals, and natural conditions were maintained or improved on a total area of approximately 14,420 ha.

Selected project activities were presented during the conference, including: regarding the protection of the capercaillie, black stork, European pond turtle, peat bogs, and bog fields. The Director of the Romincka Forest Landscape Park presented our experience in the field of active protection of amphibians and reptiles. His presentation met with great interest from the participants.

During a study trip to the Chełm Forest District, it was possible to see how foresters protect the breeding grounds of the European pond turtle. It's amazing that about 50 turtles lay eggs in a small breeding ground. To prevent predators (foxes, raccoon dogs, wild boars, etc.) from getting to them, the nests are secured with a mesh and metal plates.

Observers constantly monitor the breeding ground to act immediately after the eggs are laid.

When the turtles begin to hatch, they will be transferred to water reservoirs - they will avoid a long and dangerous journey.
