The first year of restoration of the fire-bellied toad on the Danish island of Skarø is behind us. Skarø Island is one of the 55 islands of the South Funen Archipelago, one of the few areas where the fire-bellied toad is still found in Denmark. The whole area is protected as Natura 2000 area.
From the toad's eggs collected on nearby islands, 800 young individuals were bred by Amphi, the project's Danish partner. The toads were bred at a breeding station in Funen - one of Denmark's larger islands - and released into existing habitats on Skarø.
The restitution program will last for 3 years and it is planned to relocate 1.5 thousand young toads, which will become the basis of the restored population.
